Legal & Ethical Aspects to Suicide Risk Assessment and Management

Are you are a mental health practitioner who encounters clients experiencing suicide ideation? Are you a Supervisor or Leader wondering whether you are providing sound guidance to your staff? Understanding your legal and ethical obligations when working with clients experiencing suicidality is a necessity.

As a professional, you must be able to reasonably assess a client’s risk for suicide, navigate your responsibilities and take whatever steps are ethically appropriate to prevent their harm.

You are accountable for your decisions, whereby this training supports you in recognising, formulating and collaborating for better client outcomes, while also supporting your career development.

Times – 1 day (9am -4:30 pm, with breaks)

Content Inclusions

This training includes evaluation of assessment practice, documentation, referral and management practices, and recognition of occupation based risks*.

Specific focus areas include:

  • Language use and impacts on the practitioner and client
  • Informed consent and capacity to consent
  • Limits to confidentiality
  • Legal obligations in detecting and responding to suicidal clients
  • Practitioner ethical responsibilities, as well as decision making under pressure (case studies)
  • Essential aspects of documentation, communication and collaboration
  • Reviews of practitioner’s actions using the findings of coroners inquests
  • Selection of screening and assessment tools – what stacks up?
  • Suicide Safety Planning and Intervention planning

Follow-up or stand-alone consultation services are available. Complement your training with a professional review of your systems, procedures and environment.
