Terrena Betterridge

Clinical Nurse Specialist/Facilitator

Terrena is a Clinical Nurse Specialist with over ten years experience working primarily in psychiatric and alcohol and other drug settings, with qualifications in Alcohol and Drug Studies, Mental Health Nursing and Nursing Practice. Terrena’s practice has included admission, assessment, treatment and management of inpatients into various acute care psychiatric settings. These include short stay withdrawal management services, psychiatric services and case management for the Stimulant Treatment Program based in Newcastle. She currently provides consultation services in drug and alcohol to staff and patients admitted to hospital for planned and unplanned treatment.

Terrena demonstrates exceptional therapeutic skills in key psychological therapies including Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in her work with clients around substance use and addiction. Her principles of intervention lay in harm minimisation, motivational interviewing, psychoeducation and comprehensive understanding of drug and alcohol pharmacology, neurology and best practice treatment approaches. Terrena’s vast experience in working with clients presenting with addiction related problems gives her exceptional understanding and skill in the treatment of alcohol, opiate, amphetamine and cannabis related disorders. Her knowledge also extends to prescribed substances, nicotine and a range of other illicit substances. She has also demonstrated capacity as program coordinator in diversion activities and coordination of multidisciplinary approaches to substance recovery interventions. A key feature of her work is not only the direct assessment and intervention, but discharge, relapse prevention and family support intervention planning.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Terrena with her wealth of knowledge in substance abuse and addiction to the Suicide Risk Assessment programs.
